Ayodhya District Administration Demolishes Illegal Shopping Complex of Rape-Accused SP Leader

In a significant legal action, the Ayodhya district administration has demolished an illegal multi-storey shopping complex owned by Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Moid Khan, who is currently under arrest for his alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 12-year-old girl. The demolition took place on Thursday under heavy security, following a court order, and involved three bulldozers and an excavator to bring down the structure, which was built on 4,000 square feet of land and valued at approximately Rs 3 crore.

Moid Khan, aged 65, was arrested on July 30, along with his servant, Raju Khan, in connection with the heinous crime. The young survivor underwent a medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) procedure at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Lucknow on August 7. Following his arrest, another illegal structure owned by Khan, a bakery built on 3,000 square feet, was also bulldozed earlier this month.

The revenue department had questioned the legality of the shopping complex, noting that it was partially built on a public road in Bhadarsa, under the Purakalandar police station area of Ayodhya. The Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA), based on a report by SDM Sohawal, issued the demolition order after the structure was found to lack an approved building plan. Despite multiple notices, no corrective action was taken by Khan.

ADA Secretary Satyendra Singh confirmed that the demolition was conducted in compliance with the court’s June order. The Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch, operating within the complex, was relocated a day prior to the demolition.

Additionally, Rashid, Chairman of Bhadarsa Municipal Panchayat and a close associate of Khan, is under investigation for allegedly coercing the rape survivor's family to withdraw the case. Rashid’s weapon licenses have been revoked, and his anticipatory bail application was denied. Further, a large portion of land meant for a basic school is reportedly under illegal occupation by a madrasa managed by Rashid, prompting calls for a deeper investigation.
