Court Appoints the Sign- Language Interpreter to help Hearing- Impaired Lawyers

This news revolves around the big action taken by the CJI, D. Y. Chandrachud, of the country to allow the hearing-impaired lawyer to present his judicial action and pronouncement in the courtroom with his sign-interpreter, Saurav Roy Chowdhary. The name of the first such lawyer is Sarah Sunny, and she has been lauded for this action by the courtroom dynamics and also by the public at large. This has marked a big milestone in the country’s achievements.

On September 22, 2023, the bench was headed by the Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, and he heard the hearing-impaired lawyer, Sarah Sunny, through the sign language interpreter, Saurav Roy Chowdhury, in a case related to the person with disabilities.


The lawyers present in the Supreme Court had applauded the fact that the Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, had allowed the hearing-impaired lawyer to argue his case through sign language. The CJI is sensitive to providing justice to the public and maintaining harmony in the country. It has also ensured the allowance last year to hear and understand the specially-abled persons.


Many changes in the infrastructure have been made to ensure accessibility for the disabled. Thereby, this act of the CJI has been greatly and largely taken by the public and has also been lauded by the courtroom dynamics. This has added to the great country’s history during the tenure of D.Y. Chandrachud.


Therefore, the CJI, D. Y. Chandrachud, announced the appointment of a sign-language interpreter by the Supreme Court to help the lawyers who are hearing-impaired in order to help the litigants comprehend and contribute effectively in the judicial proceedings.


Lastly, Sarah Sunny’s senior, Sanchita Ain, has expressed great gratitude to the CJI, D. Y. Chandrachud, for helping to arrange the interpreter. She is the first lawyer to be registered as a practicing lawyer with a hearing impairment.
