Delhi High Court Delays Hearing on Plea Alleging PM Violated Model Code of Conduct

The Delhi High Court has deferred a scheduled hearing on a petition alleging Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during a campaign rally in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. Anand S Jondhale filed the plea seeking the Prime Minister's disqualification from contesting elections for six years, citing purported violations during the rally held on April 9 in support of BJP candidate Jitin Prasada.

The court did not convene to hear the matter on the appointed date and has rescheduled it for April 29. The petition contends that Prime Minister Modi made references to Hindu and Sikh deities while seeking votes for the BJP, alleging bias and violation of the MCC.

During the rally, PM Modi reportedly accused opposition parties of obstructing the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and disrespecting Hindu beliefs. He mentioned the exclusion of certain parties from the Ram Temple's inauguration ceremony and their subsequent suspension, linking these events to the opposition's stance on the temple issue.

Additionally, PM Modi purportedly criticized the opposition alliance, referring to it as "INDIA bloc," and claimed they aimed to undermine Hindu traditions and symbols of power ("Shakti"). He accused the opposition of disrespecting "Shakti" and implied that worshippers of such power would not support the Congress party.

The petition argues that such remarks violate the MCC, which prohibits politicians from making divisive or communal statements during election campaigns. It seeks stringent action against PM Modi, including his disqualification from contesting elections for six years.

The delay in the court's hearing highlights the significance of the case, which raises questions about the conduct of political leaders during election campaigns and their adherence to electoral norms. The outcome of the hearing on April 29 will determine the next steps in addressing the allegations against Prime Minister Modi.
