Due to a lack of detention facilities, vulnerable immigrants are being held in jail; Karnataka Legal Services Authority moves to high court; a notice has been issued
On a petition filed by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority seeking instructions to take immediate steps for setting up a sufficient number of Detention Centers with all necessary amenities in the state for the detention of illegal immigrants awaiting deportation, the Karnataka High Court on Monday served notice to the Union of India and other respondents.
The notice was issued by a division bench consisting of Justice S Vishwajith Shetty and Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe. The plea also asks the court to order Respondents Nos. 1 and 3 to take prompt action to remove any illegal immigrants still present in the State within a certain period of time.
