High Court Grants Interim Protection to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani in Assam Police FIR

The High Court has granted interim protection from arrest to popular YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Assam Police. The case pertains to allegations against Chanchlani over his content, which reportedly led to legal action under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chanchlani, known for his comedic and satirical videos, moved the High Court seeking relief, arguing that the charges against him were unjustified and violated his right to free speech under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution. His legal counsel contended that the FIR was an attempt to stifle creative expression and that his content was not intended to harm or incite any unlawful activity.

The Assam Police, however, maintained that the video in question contained objectionable material, warranting legal scrutiny. They argued that the FIR was registered based on complaints alleging that the content could incite public disorder or offend sentiments.

Acknowledging the arguments from both sides, the High Court ruled in favor of granting Chanchlani interim protection, restraining law enforcement from taking coercive action against him until further hearings. The court emphasized the need to balance freedom of expression with legal accountability and stated that content creators must exercise caution while addressing sensitive topics.

This case highlights the increasing legal scrutiny over digital content and the complex intersection between free speech and legal responsibility in India’s evolving media landscape. The next hearing is expected to determine whether the case warrants further proceedings or if the FIR should be quashed.
