Jharkhand High Court

In a significant development, the Jharkhand High Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to furnish a comprehensive report on pending criminal cases involving Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the state.

During the hearing, the court raised concerns about the delay in case submissions and the presentation of witnesses by the probe agency. The court's directive underscores the need for transparency and accountability in addressing legal proceedings against public representatives.

Advocate Dhiraj Kumar has indicated that the next hearing on this matter is scheduled for April 16. This initiative follows the Supreme Court's call for expediting trials of cases involving lawmakers.

Six specialized MP/MLA courts in Jharkhand are currently dedicated to hearing criminal cases against public representatives. The courts' establishment came in response to the Supreme Court's directives and the Jharkhand High Court's proactive stance in addressing pending cases against lawmakers.

The declaration and affidavit submissions during Assembly elections have revealed that 41 out of 81 MLAs, constituting 51% of the legislative house, have pending criminal cases against them. This revelation underscores the significance of the judiciary's role in ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law.

A total of approximately 167 cases are pending in courts against both incumbent and former MPs and MLAs in the state. The court's intervention seeks to expedite the legal process and ensure that justice is served without undue delay.

The Jharkhand High Court's directive to the CBI reflects a commitment to transparency and efficiency in the legal system, emphasizing the importance of addressing criminal cases against public representatives in a timely manner. The upcoming hearings are expected to shed further light on the progress and challenges in resolving these cases.
