Justice V. Ramasubramanian Appointed as NHRC Chairperson by President Murmu

Former Supreme Court judge Justice V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The announcement was made by President Droupadi Murmu, following the recommendation of a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The committee included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi, representing the opposition in Parliament.

Justice Ramasubramanian succeeds Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, whose tenure ended on June 1, 2024. This appointment makes Justice Ramasubramanian the ninth Chairperson of the NHRC, a body tasked with the critical responsibility of protecting and promoting human rights in India.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian served on the Supreme Court from 2019 to 2023. His judicial career began in 2006 as an additional judge of the Madras High Court. He later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and a judge of the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad, continuing in the Telangana High Court post-bifurcation.

Notable achievements in his judicial tenure include being the first Indian judge to conduct a hearing via Skype, addressing an urgent case involving 89 orphanage inmates. His bench also championed the decriminalization of defamation proceedings, aligning with global perspectives on freedom of expression.

Justice Ramasubramanian's appointment comes at a crucial time for the NHRC, with expectations that his extensive judicial experience will strengthen the Commission's role in addressing human rights issues. His leadership is anticipated to bring a balance of progressive legal interpretation and administrative efficiency to the institution.

This appointment underscores the continued commitment to ensuring that the NHRC operates under the guidance of individuals with significant judicial expertise and integrity, reflecting the importance of safeguarding human rights in a democratic framework.
