Women's rights have been reiterated numerous times in legislation and rulings. Even in 2022, however frightening it may sound, it might not necessarily alter many people's perspectives. A lawyer made one of these remarks yesterday in front of the Supreme Court.
DY Chandrachud and Justice AS Bopanna were sitting on a division bench to hear a request for maintenance from an estranged father, Rao* (respondent), on behalf of a daughter, Lathika* (petitioner no. 2), following the death of her mother. "She is a liability", the attorney for Rao stated during the hearing.
Justice Chandrachud quickly said, "Daughters are not a liability," and added that the lawyer should carefully review Article 14 of the Indian Constitution.
"Let her concentrate on the judicial services exam, and then she will not be dependent on the father at all. Guide her on how to appear for the judicial exam", the judge said after he noted that Lathika is a lawyer.
