Malayalam Actor Baburaj Seeks Anticipatory Bail in Rape Case Filed in Kerala

Malayalam actor Baburaj has approached the Kerala High Court with an anticipatory bail application in connection with a rape and sexual harassment case filed against him at the Adimali police station in Idukki. The allegations surfaced after the release of the Justice K. Hema Committee Report, which highlighted widespread sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry.

The complainant, who worked as a receptionist at Baburaj’s resort in Munnar, accused the actor of abusing her in 2018. She further alleged that he raped her in 2019 at his house, where she had been invited under the pretext of discussing potential opportunities in the film industry. The complainant claimed that the assault occurred while she was resting, and that Baburaj entered the room during this time.

In his bail plea, Baburaj has denied all allegations, stating that the complainant willingly came to his house and stayed for a day following the alleged incident. He contended that the complainant’s claim lacks credibility, as it overlooks her voluntary actions.

Baburaj’s petition further asserts that the complainant maintained communication with him after the alleged incident, and that her messages indicate a consensual and close relationship. He claims the content of these messages suggests she was attempting to initiate a sexual relationship with him. He argues that this shows the interaction between them was consensual, involving two adults.

The anticipatory bail plea has been filed through a legal team consisting of Advocates S. Rajeev, V. Vinay, M. S. Aneer, Sarath K. P., Perjith Philip Joseph, Anilkumar C. R., and K. S. Kiran Krishnan.

The case, registered as Baburaj Jacob v. State of Kerala and Another (BA 7594/2024), is now pending before the Kerala High Court. The court is expected to hear the matter and decide on Baburaj's anticipatory bail application.
