On 9th October, The National Green Tribunal asked all Central (Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS)) and State governments (Chief Secretaries in all States) to submit a report on the enforcement of given directions by NGT in 2021 to curb river pollution.

A bench consisting of Dr. A Senthil Veil, an expert, and Justice (retired) Prakash Shrivastava, the chairperson passed this order after noting the non-execution of various directions and concern about the non-implementation of the orders given in 2021 by the concerned authorities of India.

In February 2021, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued directives to solve sewage generation and treatment deficiencies as well as river pollution control. The Jal Shakti Ministry was also told by the tribunal to establish a National River Rejuvenation Mechanism. The NGT is now worried that not all states have completely truly implemented these guidelines, though.

The tribunal determined that Assam still does not have a facility for treating the 437.23 million litres of sewage that are produced every day. The applicant further emphasized 30 standalone Faecal STPs in 30 locations and the sluggish implementation of sewage treatment plants in Guwahati and other areas of Assam. Assam's contaminated river sections have gone from 44 in 2018 to 10 in 2022, although a new section of the Tocklai River has been added along Kumar Kaibarta. The number of polluted river sections in Bihar has increased from 6 to 18, and the river Sirsa's water quality has fallen from priority III to II. The tribunal approved the execution request and demanded a compliance report in return.

The next hearing date for the matter is December 13.
