PM Modi Inaugurates National Conference of District Judiciary, Urges Speedy Justice in Crimes Against Women

On August 31, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day National Conference of the District Judiciary, organized by the Supreme Court of India. The event, attended by over 800 judges from across the country, marks a significant gathering aimed at enhancing the judiciary's efficiency and responsiveness.

In his inaugural address, PM Modi underscored the importance of the judiciary as the protector of the Constitution, emphasizing its role in upholding democratic values over the past 75 years. He highlighted the judiciary's crucial interventions, particularly during times of crisis such as the Emergency, when fundamental rights were under threat. "The 75 years of the Supreme Court not only reflect the journey of an institution but also the evolution of Indian democracy and constitutional values," PM Modi stated.

He further noted that the judiciary has consistently safeguarded the nation’s unity and protected the spirit of justice. The Prime Minister commended the ongoing efforts to modernize the judicial system, citing mission-level planning to improve court efficiency. He mentioned initiatives like the recognition of electronic summons under the BNSS, which aim to reduce the judiciary's workload. He also called on the Supreme Court to take the lead in training judges and advocates on these new technologies.

PM Modi specifically addressed the need for expedited justice in cases involving crimes against women and children. He pointed out the establishment of fast-track special courts in 2019 and the creation of deposition centers for witnesses as crucial steps toward this goal. He urged the activation of district monitoring committees, comprising the District Judge, District Magistrate, and Superintendent of Police, to ensure that these cases are handled with the utmost urgency. "The swifter the justice, the stronger the assurance of protection for our citizens," he remarked.

The conference, symbolizing a collective effort to ease the process of justice, also saw the release of a commemorative coin and stamp celebrating 75 years of the Supreme Court's establishment.
