Pune Police Constable Suspended for Coercing Rape Survivor's Family

A Pune Police Head Constable, Sudhir Holkar, has been suspended after allegations surfaced of him pressurizing the family of a minor rape survivor in a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The suspension follows an inquiry prompted by the Bombay High Court's directive to the Pune Police to investigate the matter.

The incident came to light when the family of the 10-year-old survivor attempted to withdraw their statements in court but disclosed coercion by Constable Holkar and others. Despite initial claims by Pune Police officials clearing Holkar of any wrongdoing, the court ordered a probe into the matter.

During a recent hearing led by Justice Madhav Jamdar, Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, Pune (Rural), issued an unconditional apology and confirmed Holkar's suspension due to his behavior and conduct before the High Court. Deshmukh also outlined steps taken to ensure proper assistance to the court for bail applications, including mandating police personnel attending court proceedings to be in uniform.

Further directives from Justice Jamdar included limiting police personnel attending court proceedings to those of Sub-Inspector rank or higher from the Pune (Rural) Police. Additionally, it was stipulated that police personnel must travel to the High Court in official vehicles provided by the Police Control Cell, Pune (Rural), departing at 6 am daily.

To facilitate coordination, a WhatsApp group for Pune (Rural) Police Officials has been established. These measures aim to streamline court proceedings and enhance accountability within the police force.

The case highlights the importance of ensuring the protection and support of survivors of sexual assault, with the court's intervention underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement. The suspension of Constable Holkar serves as a reminder of the repercussions for misconduct and the judiciary's commitment to upholding justice.
