SC Hearing: Kejriwal & Soren's Pleas Against ED Arrest

 Arvind Kejriwal

The Supreme Court is set to hear today the petitions filed by former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal against their arrests by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Both cases are listed before a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta.

Hemant Soren's petition cites the delay in the Jharkhand High Court's verdict on his petition against the ED's arrest. Despite concluding the hearing on February 28, 2024, the High Court has not pronounced its judgment. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Soren, had sought urgent listing before Justice Khanna, highlighting that the delay was resulting in Soren's incarceration during a crucial election period. Soren was arrested on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam and has been in custody since then. Although he initially approached the Supreme Court after his arrest, the Court directed him to seek relief from the High Court instead.

On the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal has moved the Supreme Court challenging the April 9 judgment of the Delhi High Court, which dismissed his writ petition contesting his arrest by the ED in connection with the Delhi liquor policy. Kejriwal has been in custody since his arrest on March 21. Both the ED and Kejriwal have filed their respective affidavits and rejoinders in the matter.

Legal observers anticipate crucial developments during today's hearing, as the Supreme Court considers the pleas of these prominent political figures. The outcome of these cases may have significant implications for the legal and political landscape, particularly concerning the scope of ED's investigative powers and the rights of individuals facing such arrests.
