Supreme Court Denies Early Hearing, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Remains in Jail

In a setback for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Supreme Court has declined an urgent hearing of his petition challenging his arrest on corruption charges related to an alleged liquor policy scam. Consequently, Kejriwal will stay in jail until at least April 29, allowing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) time until April 27 to respond to his plea.

The rejection of an early hearing deals a blow to Kejriwal's aspirations of securing release ahead of the Lok Sabha election, hindering his ability to campaign for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This decision follows a similar dismissal of his petition by the Delhi High Court last week, where the ED presented substantial evidence implicating Kejriwal in the formation of the now-defunct policy and soliciting bribes amounting to ₹100 crore.

Kejriwal's efforts to expedite the legal process were previously thwarted by the Supreme Court's refusal to constitute a special bench during Eid holidays. His argument against arrest, citing political motives and timing, was dismissed by the High Court, which deemed the ED's evidence compelling and validated his arrest.

The AAP leader's defiance in the face of arrest underscores the contentious nature of the case, with the party denouncing the charges as politically motivated. However, the courts have maintained that the matter pertains to legal scrutiny rather than political conflict.

This development unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing investigations into the alleged liquor policy scam, with two of Kejriwal's associates already arrested. Questions raised by the Supreme Court regarding the absence of recovered bribe money further intensify scrutiny on the ED's case, as it alleges a conspiracy involving substantial sums intended for liquor permit allocation in Delhi.

Kejriwal's incarceration marks a significant moment in Indian political history, as he becomes the first sitting Chief Minister to be arrested on corruption charges. The legal proceedings surrounding his case continue to attract attention and scrutiny, with broader implications for political dynamics in the country.
