Supreme Court Directs Jharkhand to Align Prison Manual with 2016 Guidelines

The Supreme Court of India has directed the Jharkhand government to amend and bring its prison manual in line with the 2016 Model Prison Manual. This directive came during a hearing in response to a plea highlighting the outdated practices in the state’s prisons.

The bench, headed by Justice [insert relevant name if available], emphasized the importance of uniformity in prison administration across the country and stressed the need for modernization and human rights compliance in prison management.

The Model Prison Manual, introduced in 2016 by the Ministry of Home Affairs, serves as a comprehensive framework for prison reforms, covering aspects such as prisoner rehabilitation, infrastructure, medical facilities, and staff training. It aims to ensure humane treatment of inmates while addressing systemic inefficiencies.

The Supreme Court noted that several states, including Jharkhand, continue to rely on outdated prison rules that fail to meet contemporary standards. The bench directed the state government to promptly adopt the 2016 guidelines and submit a compliance report within a specified timeframe.

This development reflects the judiciary's proactive role in pushing for prison reforms, ensuring that the rights of inmates are safeguarded while maintaining prison discipline and security.

The Jharkhand government is now tasked with revising its prison policies to meet the Supreme Court's directive, a move expected to bring significant improvements in the state's prison system.
