Supreme Court Issues Notice in Soumya Vishwanathan Murder Case, Challenges Bail to Convicts

The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the petition filed by Madhavi Vishwanathan, the mother of slain journalist Soumya Vishwanathan, challenging the bail granted to the four convicts involved in her daughter's murder case. The bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal issued the notice after a brief hearing, directing responses from the convicts and the Delhi Police within four weeks.

The plea seeks the cancellation of the suspension of sentence and bail granted to Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Singh Malik, and Ajay Kumar, who were serving life imprisonment for the 2008 murder of Soumya Vishwanathan. The convicts had been awarded double life sentences for their involvement in the organized crime.

The counsel representing Madhavi Vishwanathan emphasized the gravity of the case, highlighting that the convicts had already spent approximately 15 years in jail. Despite the High Court's decision to grant bail, the convicts remained incarcerated due to their involvement in another murder case.

In February, the Delhi High Court had suspended the sentences of the four convicts, citing their lengthy incarceration since their arrest in 2008. However, they were unable to be released as they were serving life sentences in another murder case.

Soumya Vishwanathan was tragically shot dead in her car in South Delhi's Nelson Mandela Marg in September 2008 while returning home from work. The police determined that robbery was the motive behind the murder.

The Supreme Court's decision to issue notice marks a crucial step in the legal proceedings, indicating a thorough examination of the bail granted to the convicts involved in the heinous crime. The case continues to evoke widespread attention as efforts are made to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
