Supreme Court to Hear CBI Appeals in Nithari Killings Acquittals in March

The Supreme Court of India has scheduled the final hearing of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) appeals against the acquittals of Surendra Koli in the infamous Nithari killings case for March 2025.

The Nithari killings, a series of gruesome murders and sexual assaults discovered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, in 2006, shocked the nation. Surendra Koli, a domestic helper, and Moninder Singh Pandher, his employer, were initially convicted of heinous crimes involving kidnapping, sexual abuse, and murder of several minors and women. While Koli faced multiple death sentences, Pandher's convictions were overturned in some cases.

In recent years, Koli received acquittals in a few cases due to lack of evidence or procedural lapses. The CBI has challenged these acquittals in the Supreme Court, asserting that sufficient evidence supports Koli's culpability. The apex court has now set the stage for final arguments to determine whether the lower court decisions will be overturned.

The hearing holds significant public interest, as the Nithari killings remain one of the most horrific crimes in Indian history. Victims’ families continue to demand justice, emphasizing the need for stringent accountability for such crimes.

The Supreme Court’s decision to schedule the appeals for final hearing underscores the case’s enduring legal and societal implications. Both the prosecution and defense are expected to present comprehensive arguments, considering the gravity of the charges and their impact on the judicial system.
