Mumbai TISS Student Found Dead: Police Investigate Ragging Allegations
Mumbai, August 25, 2024: In a tragic incident, a student from the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, was found dead at his rented apartment on Saturday morning. The deceased, identified as Anurag Jaiswal, hailed from Lucknow and was enrolled in the Human Resource Management programme at the institute.
The circumstances surrounding his death have raised serious concerns, with the police suspecting that the incident might be related to ragging—a practice strictly banned across educational institutions in India. According to sources, Anurag had attended a party on Friday night in Vashi, which was attended by approximately 150 students. He was accompanied by his roommates, who later found him unresponsive the next morning.
Upon discovering that Anurag was not waking up, his roommates immediately rushed him to a hospital in Chembur, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police have since questioned the roommates and are investigating the events leading up to his death. An accidental death report has been filed, and further inquiries are ongoing.
Anurag's family, residing in Lucknow, has been informed of the incident. They have requested that the post-mortem examination be delayed until their arrival in Mumbai. The police have assured the family of a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of death and whether ragging played a role.
Ragging, a form of abuse often disguised as a tradition in educational institutions, has been outlawed in India, with stringent laws and punishments in place to curb the practice. The death of Anurag Jaiswal, if linked to ragging, could lead to serious legal consequences for those involved.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident has once again highlighted the pressing need for strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws and the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions.
