TMC MP Demands CBI Probe, Custodial Interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner and RG Kar Ex-Principal

Meta Description:

TMC MP urges CBI probe into Kolkata CP, ex-principal's roles.

Legal News:

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a thorough probe into allegations against Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh. In a tweet, Ray emphasized the necessity of custodial interrogation for both individuals to uncover the truth behind the "suicide story" that has been circulating.

Ray’s demand for a CBI investigation follows mounting allegations that the Kolkata Police mishandled and attempted to cover up the case. The TMC MP questioned several actions taken during the initial investigation, including the delayed use of a sniffer dog and the unexplained demolition of a wall within the premises.

However, Ray's demand was met with opposition from his own party. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh defended the Kolkata Police Commissioner, stating that Vineet Goyal had acted swiftly within the first 12 hours of the investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused. Ghosh argued that further interrogation was already in progress and criticized Ray's call for the Police Commissioner's custodial interrogation as "illogical."

The case was transferred to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court on August 13. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has also raised concerns, alleging serious lapses by the Kolkata Police, including the replacement of crucial evidence such as blood-stained items and a wash basin. Adhikari claimed that the body of the deceased doctor was moved to the seminar hall after being murdered elsewhere on the premises.

The CBI commenced its investigation on August 14, and all eyes are now on the agency to see if it will address the alleged cover-up and bring clarity to the events surrounding the doctor’s death. The case has sparked significant political controversy, highlighting deep divisions within West Bengal’s ruling TMC party.
